Ruth Brown joined MAD Academy as a franchisee in 2007.
Since then she has successfully launched her business across Camberley,
Chobham, Windlesham and Woking. Here she tells us why she decide to join the MAD
team, and what it was
like to launch her own successful MAD Academy business!
Q: What were you doing before you joined MAD Academy?
I had been working as a Nurse and a Health Visitor in
the Camberley area for many years.
Q. Why did you decide to change you career?
I needed to change my work life balance! In
particular, I
needed to be able to look after my son during the school holidays. He
has ADHD and Aspergers syndrome and is too old for play schemes. I was also wanting some fun in my life!
Q: Why did you decide to take up a MAD Academy franchise?
I went to the ONE LIFE exhibition at Earls Court and
came across MAD Academy there. I really liked the ethos of MAD Academy - the way it centres on the
child and all
areas of its development while increasing the bond between carer and
child through having fun together. When I meet the directors, they were friendly and caring. I was attracted to the
possibility of still working with
children and as a bonus I'd be able to rediscover my love for music which had been
with me from an early age. I come from one of the 'singing families of
Liverpool' and still remember family get-togethers where spoons, pan
lids, guitar and mouth organ joined together in a cacophony of sound! Also
the name MAD Academy made me laugh!
Q: What skills/knowledge had you developed in the past that have helped you set up your business?
I was used to working on my own and wanted to work for myself.
I had in the past run a weekenders business but the work with MAD is
quite different.
Q: How did you find the training and initial support provided by MAD
Academy?
Very good! When I needed more explanation I got it and
what is really important is that the help is ongoing and very supportive.
Q: How did you feel about starting your own business?
I was a bit apprehensive but also extremely excited!
Q: How have the past few months been?
Hard work but rewarding.
Q: What has been the most rewarding aspect of your business?
Watching the children enjoying themselves and having fun.
With 5
brothers and 2 sons myself, I have really loved the energy boys bring to
classes!
Q: Has anything taken you by surprise?
Yes, how much advertising needs to be done. And how much work there is when I get back home.
Q: Having started your business, what are your hopes for
the future?
I would eventually like to develop a MAD Academy class for children with special needs.
It will take a lot of hard work and discipline, but I believe I can do
it.
Q: Would you recommend buying a franchise to others?
If they are willing to put the work in, then yes!
